2 weeks ago, Laney was lying in our bed and I looked over and noticed her right thumb looked funny. I grabbed her hand and tried to move her thumb to the straight position or "thumbs up" position and could not budge it. Jason then tried and nothing. I asked her teachers that day if they had noticed and they said yes but thought she just held it like that. I got so upset that morning thinking something major could be wrong with my baby girl and felt like a horrible mother because I just had noticed it! It is her right thumb and we have always said she was left handed because she does everything with her left hand but what if this was why she does everything left handed! How long has it been like this I have no idea and I can't describe to you the feeling that something could be wrong with her. Of course my kids have been sick before and Laney even in the hospital but it just was this whole other feeling that she could have something life changing wrong with her. My heart for sure goes out to my friends that have dealt with such a thing for sure! Anyway, we went to our pediatrician and Laney has trigger finger. It is no big deal, it is a tendon in her thumb that is stuck basically. She suggested therapy. We went today to a pediatric therapist (she was awesome by the way!) and she evaluated her and said because we can't even budge her thumb straight (she can move it down just not up) there is nothing she can really do except splint it and given her age of 2 that is not an ideal thing and it may not work at all. Best option is surgery. The therapist did say Laney was by no means delayed in her fine motor skills. She uses her right hand and thumb well. She pinches things with her thumb and it is not affecting her movements but it does need to be fixed. We will go to an orthopedic after our pediatrcian gets the report and refers us to one. The surgery is suppose to be a quick and easy one kinda like tubes so no need to worry but guess Miss Laney bug will have a little surgery soon. See below her sweet little finger!
Her thumb. She can move her thumb down and to the side just can't give ya a "thumbs up"
