Pneumonia!

Yeah..Pneumonia. That was NO fun! Poor Laney bug had Pneumonia and ended up in the hospital for 3 days last week. Dr. Wells and the pediatric nurses at the hospital were WONDERFUL but I can't say the same about the ER dr at that hospital and the other dr. in the clinic. I am still just a little mad over it! It started Friday night (almost 2 weeks ago) when Laney coughed her little head off. So much she sounded like she was choking. WEll with Parker, that ALWAYS meant he had some infection or respiratory something. It did not matter that he had no fever and Laney has already proven to be one that does not run fever much. That next morning I also heard a little rattle in her chest. NOt much just a little. So Saturday morning I took her to the clinic since they were open and I really wanted her problem to be documented at her pediatricians office and not just at the minor medical clinic. So took her to the pediatrician office and I was sad Dr. Wells was not there that day but the other dr. She listened to her and checked the obvious throat and ears and went on to tell me that all was clear and that it was just a little cold and to give her Robitussin. Ok, lady I am not new to any of this and I just was not convinced all that coughing she did was a cold. But, we went on home. After every nap, she woke up Croupy sounding. NOt croupy cough but that croupy wheezing. And that night when she went to bed she woke up coughing and croupy sounding that we gave her a breathing treatment left over from her bronchitis a month ago. That helped. Sunday all day she had periods of fast breathing and where she made noises. I gave her breathing treatments and they seemed to help until that night. I had already made my mind up we were going to see Dr. Wells the next day. Her breathing just got faster and she was making noises with every breath. She also was running a little fever. I called the dr. on call which was Dr. Ram and he was so nice and said from what you are describing she will need to be seen tonight and will probably be admitted to the hospital. If it is safe for you to drive here (her pediatrician is 40 minutes away) then come here so Dr. Wells can see her in the morning. Well she had gotten a little better and was not struggling to breathe so I took her where Dr. Wells could see her in the morning. We get to the Er..poor thing was crying and crying and threw up a few times. After 3 hours the ER dr. finally saw her which it was about 1 in the morning by this point and she had gone to sleep and was resting ok. The dr. who I thought would be good because I knew who he was listened to her for 10 seconds and said, she is clear and is not wheezing. I tried to explain to him that she was breathing 10-12 breathes in 10 seconds earlier and her little belly looked like a balloon going in and out and with every breath was a noise which was wheezing some. I mean I grew up with my Dad having asthma and my mom has it and she heard and saw her and told the dr. how she was doing too. We know that was not normal. So he did give her a breathing treatment and listened again and said she is not wheezing and sent us home. I was a little upset because we had already given her 3 breathing treatments at home and they did not help at all so I just knew this was not what she needed. I aslo could not understand why he did not listen to what Dr. Ram had said about her needing to be admitted and why he did not do an x-ray or bloodwork on her. I even told him that some other babies had had pneumonia recently in her class. After the breathing treatment Laney coughed up green stuff. I know I am not a nurse or dr but I know that means infection. The respiratory therapist said her chest does sound clear but that is not normal. I said if her chest is clear where is it coming from? He said either sinuses or lungs. The nurse when she was discharging us from the ER said that she heard junkiness in her chest in triage and that she probably had at least bronchitis if not pneumonia. She said she would go to Dr. Wells in the morning for sure because the dr. never ordered bloodwork or x-rays. She even got more concerned when Laney was trying to cough mucus out but it was so thick she couldn't. The nurse said "that scares me that it could be pneumonia. The dr. I guess did not think so or think about it because he sent us home. We got home about 2:30 in the morning and poor Laney tossed, turned and cried till the morning. I took her back to Dr. Wells and the entire time in the waiting room she just had her head in my chest staring and sucking her thumb. So not like her to not be smiling and looking around talking to people. OH and she had fever that morning also. I was going to stomp my feet if no one listened to me this time that something was wrong. Of course Dr. WElls though listened to her and said she has Pneumonia and will have to go to the hospital. She said did they not do x-rays lastnight and I said No! She had double pneumonia with it the worse in the lower right lung. Poor thing hated being stuck and I don't blame her. I found it the hardest to watch them suction her throat for mucus. Poor thing! I told the nurses and respiratory therapists about our trip to the ER and one told me that I was the second family to give the same story! I mean does that ER dr know how dangerous pneumonia can be especially to a baby! I asked too how could they keep telling me her chest was clear or that they did not hear anything and they told me that you can be so tightly congested that nothing rattles. Shouldn't the dr. have known that too? Anyway, I am just so glad Dr. Wells is awesome and took such great care of her! I did not have my camera or would have taken pictures of us in her little oxygen tent or "baby jail" aka the hospital baby bed she liked to get in and play. Laney and I slept in a regular hospital bed together. The nurses all loved her and all talked about how beautiful she was and loved her big blue eyes. I don't know if her big blue eyes really show up in pictures but she does have these huge pretty blue eyes! Dr. Wells said she was such a joy. OH and poor Laney was so ready to go. My mom would take her walking down the halls because she would say when she got in Momma's arms..bye bye bye bye. When Momma would walk back in the room, Laney would start fussing! Then when Dr. Wells came to check her Wednesday night to make the decision if she could go home, Laney started saying as Dr. Wells was checking her.."bye- bye, bye-bye!" Dr. Wells laughed and said somebody had been coaching her! But really she was doing it all on her own! Bye-bye was for sure her favorite word lastweek! Anyway, It was an experience! Poor thing just gets respitory issues when our weather acts crazy. Her pneumonia was not the contagious kind thank goodness. Right before our first coughing fit our weather was 84 and really 40 the next day! Everytime the weather goes from one extreme to the next somebody gets sick. WE are so glad to be home though! Nothing else much going on! But that is our long story of Pneumonia! Oh Parker threw a fit to come see his Laney and wanted to stay with us. Then he told me to come home and leave her there by herself for the night! He missed me! Thanks so much to my mom and Dana. They cleaned my house, took care of Parker and came to see us lots. It helped so much since Jason was so busy! Poor Jason was running up and down the road to see us and trying to keep things going. Anyway, I hope we NEVER have to go through that again!

Oh my goodness! What an ordeal!! I hope you don't have to pay for that pointless ER trip! One nice thing about our ER is that you can request that a pedi see your kid instead of the normal ER doc. Anyway I would sure be leaving a note for that doc saying she did have pneumonia! But i am glad your regular pedi is great and that you are all doing well now. Poor Laney! I know it is so hard to watch them hurt and get poked. It still breaks my heart with syd!

How scary! I am so glad that Laney is doing better. She sounds like a real trooper. Too bad you had such a bad ER experience. And luckily your regular doc listened to you. It makes me so mad when doctors do not listen to parents. We know our kids so well - we know when something is wrong!!!

Our weather has been like that too. In fact, I am sick now with a congestion/cough thing and praying really hard that the kids do not get it too.
